Recently the American Dental Association informed the Food and Drug Administration that silver fillings are safe, affordable, and durable. There is no evidence of amalgam being associated with systematic immunologic or other adverse effects. The truth of the matter is that amalgam fillings allow patients to restore their teeth without spending a fortune of money. I have patients walking around with silver fillings I placed over 30 years ago. Amalgam fillings seal the tooth better as they age. The white composite fillings that are frequently used will restore a tooth but will not hold up as well over the years. There is nothing wrong with using white fillings in the back teeth, but you must be informed that they will periodically need replacement. So the next time a dentist recommends that you should remove your silver fillings because they are unhealthy, ask him to provide the data supporting this. He will not be able to!
